The Complete History of Blogging

When discussing the history of blogging, we must first trace when and where the word was derived from. The history of blogging formally started when the term “weblog” was used by 2 lecturers from Bond University on the Gold Coast Australia by the name of G. Raikundalia and M. Reese. It was during a conference on August 14, 1985 when the word was coined on a paper presented which is entitled “ Exploiting the World Wide Web for Electronic Meeting Document Analysis and Management” which discussed the utilization of an access on a web browser to different meeting manuscript information, for instance, minutes, reports, tabled manuscripts and document catalogs.

Fascinatingly, the word itself as “weblog” has not been utilized on the residual records of the paper, which is currently being hosted at the website of the Charles Sturt University. However, the term was used on its approved context in a post at Usenet furthering the documents delivery at Bond which was published on August 6, 1995.

According to the history of blogging, the famous use of the term “weblog” as we currently know it came from a person by the name of Jorn Barger of the weblog Robot Wisdom. This phenomenon dated back in December 1997.

The beginnings of contemporary blogging are often argued about as what web-blogging or simply blogging is.  To some people, blogs are being referred to as web pages or web sites with website webpage design that offer links and remarks to other sites, and it is from this foundation that contemporary blogs have emerged.

Justin Hall, in January year 1994 has launched Justin’s Home Page which later developed to become links from the Underground. Justin’s Home Page consisted of reviews and links to other sites. Remarkably, Hall on January 10 of the year 1996 started writing an online journal with entries that are dated daily, however, each daily entry is connected by with an index page.. Some entries that he has posted included topics about his life and how his day went during that day.

In February 1996, Dave Winer has written a blog that recorded the 24 Hours of Democracy Project. Also during the same year in April, Winer inaugurated a new web site for the Frontier Software’s users. it evolved into Sripting News in the year 1997, which is considered to be one of the oldest blogs remaining in the World Wide Web today.

The history of blogging continued to flourish after Jorn Barger introduced the word weblog into famous use in December of year 1997. Blogging, as we are familiar with nowadays continued to evolve.

By 1998, Cameron Barett has published Camworld, the world’s first ever listings of blogsites. It was during the year 1999 where blogging has gone through extensive development. It was also during this year where Pyra Labs, now owned by Google has inaugurated the Free Blogger blogging service which offered simple set of tools for almost anyone who wants to start blogging. Now today, blogging has evolved in becoming a great tool for SEO to promote web traffic by placing links in blogs.

How to Make a Media Kit

By this time, you must have heard about media advertising kits and what they can do to help you make money blogging.  But what exactly is a media kit?  Basically, it’s a page that’s crammed with information that should draw in advertisers and make them interested in putting up an ad on your blog.  It’s what you should put up if you’re at a point where direct advertising is your next step, and your eager to step up your efforts at monetizing your site.

Of course, you can’t just put out any sort of media kit and hope for the best results.  Your kit should be written in such a way as to entice advertisers and convince them that your blog is a good place to invest their money in.  Here are some time-tested rules on how to create a media kit that can boost your site’s revenue:

1.  Keep it simple
The last thing you want to do is sound like an academic snob on your media kit.  When you start writing for it, string your ideas together using succinct sentences and simple phrasing and wording.  Trust us: advertisers don’t want to decode your media kit, so make everything as short, simple, and straightforward as possible.

2.  Include your blog’s profile and stats:

You should also put up a good blog profile, detailing what your niche is and what sorts of issues, concerns, or topics that your blog is immersed in.  What does your site offer that’s different from the mishmash of other sites out there?  Advertisers will definitely want to know.
You should also include the figures on your blog stats to show how much traffic your blog is getting, and where your visitors are coming from.  You can even sneak in a screen shot of your Google Analytics page, just to show potential advertisers what the deal with your site is.

3.  Give clear information on your ad packages:
Don’t give advertisers the runaround by being mysterious or unclear about your advertising packages.  Make sure to include information about the size of your ad space, your rates, the terms of payment, and which spots in your site are up for grabs.

4.  Create a page exclusively for it:
Don’t just make an entry and hope advertisers will notice.  Instead, make an entire page that contains nothing but your media advertising kit, and of course, all the details relevant to it.  Put up an extra tab on your site, or, if your template doesn’t enable that, create a link that will direct advertisers right where your kit is.

As you can see, making a media kit isn’t a complicated process, and is actually one of the best ways that you can boost your capacity to make money blogging.  Funny how so simple a page can make a difference, huh?  Just make sure that potential advertisers can find it right away, and that you put down all the necessary facts in your media kit, and your blog is ready to create an even bigger profit than ever.

Make Money While You Sleep, All Year Roung

You have might have read a lot of headlines that sound similar to this one above, or make promises like this one seems to. You probably have spent quite a bit of time reading blog posts with title like this one. After reading the article, you might have thought is was bunk… no way can I make money doing that; that won’t work, do that, write about that, endorse that… or whatever that! IT WILL DESTROY MY IMAGE!

Done well, it can enhance your brand. I’m going to give you some tips that will give you an opportunity to monetize your website or blog, while preserving your brand. One of the best and easiest ways to monetize your online properties is to join some affiliate programs and advertise them on your site.

Affiliate programs are the answer

Why affiliate programs? Simple. When you are an affiliate of a affiliate marketing program, you can start selling products without having to. All the work of writing an eBook, or recording an audio track, or programming a software product is taken care of by someone else. But that’s not all the advantages. You don’t have to create any marketing materials - those are all created for you by the person who builds the product and is running the affiliate program.

Another big advantage is that you really don’t have to manually keep track of ROI or conversion rates. Most outstanding affiliate programs will provide the members with a login to a sophisticated affiliate management tool that is based on one of the leading affiliate software programs. Software programs like these will enable you to check how your ads are doing and what your commissions are.

Five tips for choosing affiliate offers to promote

  1. Look good earnings potential - You want to make sure that if one of the people you refer to an affiliate offer buys, that you will make some decent money. Some gurus recommend that you look for high percentage payouts. My preference is to look for affiliate program where you make a large commission from a referral. This affiliate program for promoting SEO services gives you the opportunity to earn monthly recurring income up to $350.
  2. Choose programs your readers will like - It is critical that you choose affiliate programs and offers that your audience will appreciate and be interested in. It wouldn’t be too bright to choose to promote affiliate programs and products for adult content movies on a site that is dedicated to toys for toddlers. However, if you have a website that helps people find careers is sales, it would be great to promote something like How to Get Into Medical Sales.

  3. Look for affiliate programs powered by software - When you sign up for an affiliate program it will quickly become obvious if the owner of the program is serious about helping affiliate members be successful. If you are automatically redirected to a page powered by a fully-featured affiliate marketing software program, you can infer that this is a serious affiliate program. If you get an email message that says ‘here is you affiliate link’ and ‘we’ll let you know if you earn anything’ you should think carefully about investing any time. Their are several top name brands like iDev Affiliate, LinkShare, and JROX JAM. My favorite is JROX JAM, which you can get for free here: http://websitesthatdrivesales.com/recommends/free-affiliate-management-software.htm

  4. Make sure the website is NOT anonymous - What I mean is, make sure that there are real people standing behind the website, people with good reputations, who take customer service seriously. People who let you know who give you contact information with phone numbers are more likely to treat you well. They are more likely to support you and deal with you fairly. If you can find a picture, bio, and phone number of the affiliate site owner, chances are they are trustworthy. You will also be able to search the Internet to find any negative information about their program. Peggy McKee, the Medical Sales Recruiter, is one of the country’s leading sales recruiters - she proudly announces her site ownership on the about pages like this one: http://30-60-90-day-sales-plan.com/about/

  5. Choose affiliate programs that have support programs - If you are choosing a piece of software to buy, you probably wouldn’t purchase it if there was not support mechanism in place. It would be wise to use similar criteria when evaluating affiliate offerings. Affiliate website program owners that don’t put support systems in place - something like a ticket system or help desk software - probably won’t care about any their products or customers, and eventually they won’t are about you. When they do, you can be fairly confident that they are trying to delight their customers. If they AREN’T working to keep customers happy, their poor service will reflect poorly on you, and tarnish your brand.

There are a couple of affiliate programs that meet all these criteria, that I recommend if your site’s visitors would be interested in these subjects. One is an affiliate program for a sales interview tool that targets sales professionals - you can check it out here: http://30-60-90-day-sales-plan.com/affiliate-program-details/. The other is a program that has a broader appeal - it targets people who own businesses that either have no web presence or under performing websites; you can get all the information for it here: http://websitesthatdrivesales.com/blog/home/affiliate-program/

Ultimate Guide to Basic Blogging

The question on how to blog is something that most of us take for granted since majority of us have tried starting one. But for beginners, this question is rather like a disheartening tangle of questions and concerns to be resolute. In this guide, all the needed resources that you will need to get started are gathered. How to blog? Here are the things that you need to know:

What is a blog? The term blog is an abbreviated form of the word weblog, which is actually a phrase that is not commonly being used nowadays. Defining the term in the simplest manner, blog or weblog is a record of one’s thoughts, commentaries, thoughts, photos, useful links, videos, current events and almost anything.

The next discussions serve as a short primer on “how to blog”. While it is quite impossible to cover everything, the following discussion will take you from selecting your topic and the platform of your blog, through to making the texts in your blog stand out and get the attention of every reader.

Why should you write a blog? There is no specific reason why one should write a blog because it would really be all dependent on one’s motivation. Blogging can also have benefits, such as increasing web traffic. It could be an effective tool in boosting the presence of your business online. It may also be a means of sharing or even debating of ideas with like-minded individuals.

What is a blogging platform? What type of blogging Platform should you utilize? A blogging platform is defined as a software you utilize in order to publish your entries to the World Wide Web. It basically works like when you are choosing on which word processor or web browser to utilize, there are also a wide variety of blog platforms that are available which you can choose from.

What topic will you write about? This one question that often gets asked by individuals who have just started blogging is this quite non-technical question of how to blog is what they should write about. Whatever subject you may want to write about, it will always be dependent on why you are blogging. However, it is strongly advised that you may want to consider is to try finding yourself a niche in the world of blogging. There is no other better way of distinguishing yourself and establish readership, unless you are writing in behalf of a friend or a relative, is to concentrate on a specific topic or interest. If you are interested in SEO, then write about the topic itself. This is very much important for marketing for noobies.

To make your blog content standout, think of a catchy title for your blog. According to blog enthusiasts, the most important part of a blog post is the blog title because it is what make your possible readers who will find your entries through a search engine to make up their mind on whether to visit your page or not. This is where the make or break part happens. This is the part which determines whether your blog gets to read or just get passed over in favor of somebody else’s page.

What’s the Best Blog Hosting Service?

Most people who want to make money blogging often have to make a crucial first decision  about where they can put up their blog.  And what looks like an easy question is actually one of the most important elements to blogging success.  In fact, some blog service providers make blogging for money an easier task, while other providers do nothing towards that direction.

But which blog hosting services are perfect for your money-making blog, and which ones don’t cut muster?  Below is a short list of the biggest names in blogging so that you can decide which service is best for your blog:

1.  Blogger.com

Because creating a Blogger.com blog is incredibly easy, this blog hosting service has become a popular choice for bloggers everywhere.  You don’t have to pay anything, and you don’t have to have any experince in HTML or any programming language just to have your site up and running.  The problem?  Blogger.com doesn’t give you the kind of tools or customizing freedom that your blog will eventually need to earn any money.

Although beginners will initially find Blogger.com a satisfying and convenient blog hosting service, they’ll soon realize that it can’t support a monetized blog very well.  If you’re planning to put up a blog just for kicks, however, and would like a solid, dependable blog, Blogger’s for you.

2.  WordPress
With WordPress, bloggers have all the freedom to pick between the free blogs at WordPress.com and the self-hosted, fully-customizable blogs from WordPress.org.  Basically, WordPress.com echoes the services that Blogger.com already offers, but with a few more goodies in the package.  WordPress.com blogs cost nothing, are easy to set up, and don’t require a lot of hardcore internet know-how for you to maintain your blog.

WordPress.org, on the other hand, supports monetization much better than WordPress.com can.  The downloadable blogging software doesn’t cost a thing, and, unlike WordPress.com, will let you download thousands of free templates and money-making plugins to enhance your blog’s functionality.  The problem with this is that you’ll have to find and pay for web hosting to your own blog.  WordPress.org also tends to be very confusing to newbie bloggers, and will actually require at least some technical skills before you can finally put up your blog.

3.  SOLOBIS.net
If you haven’t heard of the SOLOBIS.net WordPress Plan yet, it’s because this service is the newest one in the blogging industry.  Don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s fresh, though.  This service looks like it can outdo the current giants, simply because it provides a solution that the big names don’t: it gives bloggers the best of both worlds.

Upon signing up for a SOLOBIS account, you will immediately receive a blog that has a SOLOBIS.net subdomain (e.g., www.johnsmith.solobis.net).  SOLOBIS.net blogs are run on the WordPress engine, which is good news for WordPress enthusiasts, since you’ll already be familiar with the controls.  The great thing about this service is that it combines the ease of use and convenience of WordPress.com with the customization and monetization capacities of WordPress.org.  Each SOLOBIS.net blog is already bundled with the best money-making plugins in the WordPress scene, along with over a hundred beautiful templates to choose from.

The fact that these themes and plugins are pre-installed in your blog means that you won’t have to waste time running around and looking for the right tools that will help you make money blogging.  In fact, if you think of it, your SOLOBIS.net blog is actually ready to make money way before you are.  It’s perfect for beginners who want to learn how to blog profitably without losing their heads, and it’s just as great for experienced bloggers who can only stand to benefit from all those money-making tools.

Now that you know what the differences between these blog hosting services are, it should be easier to make a choice about which provider you’ll choose.  If you just want to blog for the heck of it and don’t want anything costly or fussy, Blogger’s for you.  If you’re into monetization and if you’re eager to make money blogging, then WordPress.org and SOLOBIS are right up your alley.  If you want a free service that gives you all the best things that a paid blog can give you, however, SOLOBIS is the right provider for you.

What to Do About Blogger’s Block

Every blogger has had those days when words are especially hard to come by, and all the sentences you type out sound wrong.  Or what about those times when you feel like you’re out of fresh ideas and you feel like you have nothing new to say about your niche?  Blogger’s block is a common but frustrating obstacle for a lot of bloggers, especially because it’s a waste of time and the daily opportunity to make money blogging.

But don’t worry, blogger’s block is actually relatively easy to overcome.  Here’s some advice that will help you avoid and prevent running into that wall:

1.  Get a change of scenery
It can get pretty boring working in just one place all day.  Why not pick a different spot to work in to literally get a different view on things?  The change in scenery can spur you towards new ideas that can kick your blogging into action.  Choose a spot that you don’t usually work in, such as the terrace or the dining table.  You don’t even have to stay in your house!  Head out to a coffee shop you like, plug in your laptop, and type away while enjoying a cup of good coffee.

Working with a PC and can’t just move anywhere?  Well, you can still do with a change of scenery!  Take a 10-15 minute break and go for a walk, catch a snippet of your favorite show, or run a brief errand.  The point is to try to get a different perspective – literally and figuratively – so you can give your article a new and different spin.

2.  Move away from distractions
If you can’t work with a lot of noise going on, then you should naturally avoid spots that are hotbeds for distraction.  If you have kids and keeping watch on them is taking a toll on your work, try to get a babysitter to help out once in a while.  Move to another place in your house when people are watching TV, and avoid listening to music that might only serve to distract you.

Potential sources of distraction can also come right from your PC: games on your hard drive and certain websites can suck you in for a long time if you don’t exercise caution and restraint.  Do your best to focus on your work, and set aside a time for leisurely browsing.

3.  There’s no need to be perfect
Your own perfectionism can actually be the cause of your blogger’s block.  It isn’t that you have nothing to say – in fact, you do have some ideas and can write them down – but you feel like you always have to say it in the best way possible.  While there’s nothing essentially wrong with this, being too meticulous can bog you down.  The best tack is to just post good, informative entries that your readers can appreciate and find useful.  Go easy on yourself, and the words will come easily.

4.  Pre-empt the block
The best way to fight blogger’s block is by preventing it from happening in the first place.  Draw up an entry planner or calendar that you can fill up at the beginning of the month with ideas for potential articles.  This way, you always have a blueprint for your blog posts, and you won’t have to worry about what you’ll blog about the next day.  You can even use the hours you save on extra time to make money blogging.

Although blogger’s block can be really annoying, it’s not all that hard to get over it.  All you need to do is keep these techniques in mind, and you won’t hit a lot of snags as you go on blogging.  Just remember to take it easy on yourself, and the words should flow out in no time.

How to Boost Traffic to Your Blog

Few things are as important to blogging as site traffic is.  When you intend to make money blogging, the success of your site is going to be reliant on the number of people who manage to make it to your site, stay there, and return to become loyal readers.  Fortunately, driving traffic to your blog doesn’t always have to be a herculean task.  Here are a few tips we’ve collected for you so you can boost your site stats and encourage people to come to your site:

1.  Get out there and socialize!

If you want your blog to be visited by other people, you’ll have to do a lot of house-calls yourself – to other blogs, that is.  Shoot for blogs that concentrate on the same niche as yours, since the people who are already visiting that site are likely to be interested in what you have to say about their favorite topic, too.  Drop a well-composed comment that’s relevant to the post you’ve chosen, and don’t forget to leave a link back to your site’s URL at the bottom of your comment.

Although linking to other blogs isn’t a guarantee that you’ll get a link back, it’s still worth a shot.  Don’t just link to every blog you see, though!  Choose blogs that you like and respect, and which you actually visit when you get the chance to.

You can also pay a visit to forum boards that talk about the very same topic that your blog deals with.  Be an active member, post helpful information, and most importantly, leave a link to your blog that other forum members can click through if they want to get more of your unique advice.

2.  Fan out your work to article directories:

Come up with articles on your area of expertise, and submit them to article directories like eZine Articles and Buzzle.  These articles should be different from the ones that you’ve already posted on your site, and should give readers an idea of how much you know regarding your niche.  At the end of your article, you can leave a link to your blog, which readers can click through.  Other people can even use your article and post it on their own blogs, as long as they retain your blog’s URL at the foot of the article.  Instant backlink!

Remember that these article directories often have guidelines for posting articles.  For example, you can’t promote yourself or your site excessively, and each post must at least be 250 words long.  Some topics are definitely taboo, as well.  Need it be said that your work must be all original and not plagiarized?

3.   Write better posts
The best thing you can actually do to attract more traffic to your site is to create better, high-quality posts for your readers.  Remember, the reason why your visitors are in your blog is because they think that you might have something interesting to offer to them, or that you might be able to share something about your niche that other bloggers can’t.  If they like what they see in your blog, they’re going to come back again and again – without your having to resort to other gimmicks.

While there’s no real formula on how to attract more traffic and make money blogging, what you can do to give your blog an advantage is to fill it with quality posts that will demonstrate your expertise in your chosen niche.  As long as you make each visit worth their time, they’re going to come back and spread the word about your blog, bringing you the traffic your site deserves.
